Swine flu outbreak in Cap d’Ail
In Cap d'Ail, 64 cases of swine flu have been confirmed at the Centre Mediterranean language school. The college is situated in the hills behind Monaco on land which belongs to the Principality. Fifty-nine students and 5 staff were found to be suffering from Influenza A and were placed in quarantine in one of the school buildings – most of those affected have been allowed to go home as none of the cases were considered serious. Fifteen sick students and 5 staff remain on the premises and new arrivals have been postponed for the time being.
British yacht runs aground in Sanary-sur-Mer
Off the coast of the Var, a British yacht hit a rock near Bandol yesterday and was forced to run aground at Sanary-sur-Mer to avoid sinking. The beach at Sanary has been closed to the public as the boat's fuel tank has leaked into the sea. The beach is expected to re-open tomorrow.
2 dead in gun fight in Marseille
In Marseille, a gun fight between 4 masked men on Saturday night in the 11th arrondissement has left 2 men dead. Both men, aged 24 and 29, were known to police in connection with drug trafficking and the other 2 are actively sought by police.

A suicide bomber has died after staging an explosion near the French embassy in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott, as 2 members of staff were jogging nearby – they were taken to hospital, suffering from shock. The attack came 3 days after the west African country's coup leader took power in the former French colony, following contested elections.
Five people including a baby have died in a fire in a 9-storey apartment building in the Paris suburb of Sevran early this morning. Twenty-nine other people suffered from smoke inhalation, with 15 of them taken to a hospital for treatment.
Three French tourists were among at least 12 people killed by floods in the Philippines. They were caught in a flash flood when a dike collapsed during heavy rains.

In the FA Community Shield match at Wembley yesterday, it was a 2-all draw between Chelsea and Manchester United but Chelsea won 4-1 in a penalty shoot-out.
The local teams were all winners in the first games of the French League – Monaco beat Toulouse 1-nil, Nice won 2-nil away at St Etienne and Marseille had a 2-nil win away at Grenoble.
